AT&T AWARDS $65,000 TO YMCA OF METROPOLITAN DALLAS PROGRAM

EMPOWERING MIDDLE & HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

(Dallas, TEXAS) August 21, 2018: AT&T awards the YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas $65,000 for the Y Achievers program that empowers students to reach their highest potential. The contribution supports the continuous expansion of the program to help middle school and high school teens. Through academic aid, career exploration and mentoring, Y Achievers helps youth to raise their academic standards, develop a positive sense of self, build character, explore diverse college and career options, and learn from role models who inspire them to greater heights.

Through its Aspire program, AT&T is investing in students – at home, in the classroom and at work – to prepare them for their success tomorrow.

“Y Achievers helps young people unlock their potential,” said Bruce Byrd, Chief Legal Officer of AT&T Communications and member of the YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas Board of Directors. “We are expanding this important program to additional schools in Dallas to give more students the opportunity to thrive in their academic and career journeys.”

The Y Achievers program is a national YMCA program that was started in Houston, Texas to provide African American teens with a positive sense of self and aspirations for professional careers in the workforce. Today, the program helps low-to-moderate income students and families across the country.  It empowers youth to make positive social, educational, career and personal goals through mentoring, hands-on activities, educational and vocational experiences.

For four years, the Y Achievers program has been a part of the Dallas Y serving high school students only.  The generous contribution from AT&T allows the Y to expand the program to reach over 150 students at Townview Magnet High, DeSoto High, Lancaster High and Dade Middle Schools with no costs to students.

The Y Achievers program at the YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas meets regularly throughout the year and it offers:

  • Y Achievers Academy Teen Camp
  • Y Achievers Career Clusters
  • Y Achievers Teen Summit – Fall & Spring
  • Y Achievers College Tours

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
At the Y, we work every day to help them set and achieve their personal and educational goals. As a result, thousands of children and teens throughout the community gain confidence as they recognize the Y as a place where they belong and can feel comfortable exploring new interests and passions.

Additionally, through our leadership and academic enrichment programs such as mentoring, Youth and Government, Model United Nations and Achievers college and career preparation, the Y makes sure that every child has an opportunity to envision and pursue a positive future, and to take an active role in strengthening his or her community.
