Fifteen Dallas YMCA branches participated in the 64th YMCA Youth and Government District Conference held Saturday, December 10th. The day long event was held this year at the Singley Academy in Irving. More than 700 youth and an additional 100 adults participated in the conference, which represents a 20% growth over last year. Students represented 38 different middle and high schools clubs from around the metroplex including 3 new middle and 6 new high schools.
Youth and Government is a national program of the YMCA that involves thousands of teens nationwide in state-organized model-government programs. Students form every corner of the U.S. have the opportunity to immerse themselves in experiential civic engagement and to quite literally practice democracy.
January 27-29th students will travel to Austin for the State Conference. The Dallas delegation will represent more than half of the participants attending the state conference. Several Dallas students will participate as Legislative Candidates in Austin. They are as follows: Derrick Golden, Garland as the Speaker of Hyde House, Arthur Beckel, Town North as the Speaker of the House, Valencia Mobley, Richardson, President Pro Tem, Ernesto Reyes, Irving as Attorney General and Robbie Moore, Richardson as Youth Governor.
