The YMCA at White Rock broke ground today to mark the start of the construction for the new YMCA facility on the corner of Gaston and Loving. The proposed 30,000 square foot facility is schedule for completion in the fall of 2014.

Joining YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas CEO, Gordon Echtenkamp in the ceremony was YMCA at White Rock Board Chair Alise Cortez and YMCA Vice President of Operations, Casey Klein, along with YMCA at White Rock Board of Management members, Greg Campbell, Jason Crispin, Richard Vitale, Jacob Walters, Kevin Woltjen and Gerry Worrall. Also on hand were Jay Krishnaswamy, CEO of Doctors Hospital and Tim Adams, of Doctors Hospital, SVP of Central States Region.

“I am so proud to be leading this Board during such a pivotal time in our history. What we build today will be the legacy of our Y’s future,” Alise Cortez said.

The new facility is situated on a three acre lot with a great front yard facing Gaston. The Y will feature an outdoor family pool and spray park. Along with our partnership with Doctor’s Hospital, the Y will include a 15,000 square foot wellness center with state of the art cardio and fitness equipment. Doctor’s Hospital will also have dedicated office space for wellness consultations. Several multipurpose area will provide space for traditional wellness and community programming. Features also include a babysitting area and a playground in this park like setting.

“This is an exciting time for the YMCA and the East Dallas community,” said Gordon Echtenkamp. “The Y is a beacon for the more than 10,000 people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities who are positively impacted each year through the programs here at White Rock. This new facility will not only continue that legacy but help us expand our reach in the community.”

The YMCA has been serving the East Dallas community for more than 50 years. The White Rock branch was initially housed in the Parks House on Worth and Abrams, from 1958 until 1998 when it moved to its location on Gaston near Garland Road. This location was retrofitted and updated more than a decade ago to meet the ongoing needs of the community. In an effort to continue to provide the most up to date services the community deserves and expects, the YMCA at White Rock needs an updated and expanded facility. Currently, the YMCA is in an interim space in the Lakeview Shopping Center.
