A LOOK INSIDE LONE STAR WITH JENNIFER PEWITT

Growing up, Jennifer swam at the Oak Cliff Y and participated in Lone Star during her summers. She states that it was always the highlight of her summer and the lifelong friends she made through the tournament are still with her today with kids of their own swimming at the meets. Jennifer sits down to explain the Lone Star Swim Meet weekend and the amount of amazing work done by the volunteers there.

“The Dallas Y has been the host association for the Lone Star Swim Meet for more than 30 years. This year we had 20 teams, 567 swimmers, 10 session of swimming and over 4,000 swims. From the Dallas Y we had teams from Moody, Semones, Richardson, Coppell, Waxahachie, Lake Highlands, Oak Cliff, and JER Chilton at Rockwall."

The meet is 100% executed by volunteers. The volunteer jobs include swim officials (15-20 per session), timers (18 per session), Clerk of Course, who manage all the awards (4 people per session), and hospitality that provide food for all coaches and officials (4 per session). We also have runners (2 per session) who get the meet results and DQ slips to the computer operators, and ready bench parents (6 per session) help get the kids to the starting blocks at the right time.

Most of the volunteers have current swimmers or have had kids that swam in the past and they continue to volunteer. It took thousands of volunteer hours over the course of the four days to make this meet a success. We estimated that about 5,400 hours were spread out amongst a lot awesome people.”
