Oak Cliff and Moorland Senior Showcase 2018

This year on October 30th and 31st, while many members of the community neighborhoods were getting dressed for All Hallows’ Eve and preparing to fill their bags with candy, Moorland and Oak Cliff YMCA seniors were getting their own special treat during the Senior Showcase!

As a volunteer of this event, I got to enjoy the company of a room full of laughter as one beat another in cards. I got to see the cheers as the show went on with a challenge of basketball shoot-out and annual obstacle course! Each room was full of energy and love and it flowed through the hallways into the room lined with vendors to be of assistance with that our Moorland and Oak Cliff Y seniors needed in their personal lives. These vendors like North Texas Food bank, AARP, and Soothed by Isa arrived early with smiling faces and services to provide. Free samples, cards, and totes were being distributed through the entire day. Seniors even got to receive free mammograms during this day of events! The Y appreciates all vendors who showed up and showed out for healthful living!

One of the biggest highlights of the 2-day event was the very coordinated dance off at Moorland! As what seemed to be nearly 100 seniors arriving in style with their purple and black YMCA tees on, the participants got set up and got on down with those fun and classic moves! It was now primetime in the showcase and an opportunity to put the practice to work! In humble fashion, the fun challenge ended in an appropriate tie as both teams and the crowd literally roared with support.

There is no party that can properly end without food and drink! It was a happy Halloween indeed. As many of them would say, Laughter feeds the soul. On these two days full of fun competition, increased knowledge of community services, and shared enthusiasm, all our souls were well nourished. See you all next year for a rematch!
