Emergency Y Care

March 9, 2021

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the health and safety of our members, staff, guests and the children in our care has remained our top priority. With 19 branches and camps, we serve a diverse population representing varying age groups from newborns to members over 100 years old, races, genders, people with disabilities and health conditions.

It’s our job to make thoughtful, deliberate decisions about what is right for the diverse group that represents the YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas, and making sure our employees are safe and our members feel comfortable at the Y.

After speaking with leaders of the two largest hospital systems in our area and reviewing information they provided regarding disease tracking, at this time, we will continue on our current path and follow the health and safety guidelines recommended by the CDC and other leading medical authorities by requiring all employees and guests working and visiting our facilities to wear a mask or face covering.

Our policy will remain in place that face coverings (covering nose and mouth) are required for all individuals 2 years and older while at the YMCA. Face coverings do not need to be worn in the following circumstances:

  • When exercising outside or engaging in physical activity outside.
  • When actively using a machine or piece of equipment. Masks will need to be worn when moving between machines or pieces of equipment.
  • When playing racquetball or handball.
  • When doing so poses a greater mental or physical health, safety, or security risk.
  • When consuming food or drink.
  • If a member or staff must remove their mask due to difficulty breathing, we require that they ensure 6 feet of distance from people not in their household while their mask is down.

We will continue to work with health experts in the coming weeks and months so that any changes we make are considered in the context of the COVID situation in the communities we serve.

The safety and well-being of everyone in our community is our top priority. We’re doing everything possible to ensure our facilities meet the highest standards for hygiene and safety. As we have said since the start of this pandemic, at its heart the Y is a community service organization. Health officials have advised that one of the most effective things we can all do for one another is to wear a mask to protect each other from COVID-19. Please join us in helping our whole community, especially those most vulnerable, by wearing a mask. If our actions can prevent even one person from getting sick or even worse, losing their life, we will always make that choice.

There is encouraging news on the horizon in the fight against COVID-19. We hope with continued mitigation efforts, we will continue on this positive path and that soon, this pandemic will be behind us.

As always, thank you for being a continued supporter of the YMCA.
