A Thanksgiving Tradition since 1967

November 4, 2019  For more than 5 decades friends and families have made the Dallas YMCA Turkey Trot their Thanksgiving tradition.  On Thursday, November 28th, nearly 23,000 participants are expected to turn out to Dallas City Hall Plaza for the 8-mile race and 5K fun run and, the Junior Trot presented by TruMoo for 6 to 11-year olds. The Dallas YMCA Turkey Trot benefits YMCA programs that help the YMCA to strengthen the foundation of community.

The Dallas YMCA Turkey Trot is one of the largest multi-event races in the country. The excitement that surrounds this event continues to grow each year as generations of families turn out to experience the fun and family-friendly atmosphere that is the backdrop to the race.  The Trot consists of both a certified 5K and an 8-mile race.  All participants have the option to be chip timed in both the 5K and 8-mile race with a $5 timing charge and a timed runner corral. All 8-mile runners receive commemorative finisher medals.

A must to check out this year is THE ROOST, sponsored by Nebraska Furniture Mart. Formerly known as the “VIP Area”, The Roost is a gathering place for families, runners, and walkers to fuel up before The Trot. The Roost is expanding this year with more covered and uncovered seating.  Breakfast, coffee and hot chocolate will be served along with Michelob ULTRA, wine and mimosas available for purchase.  New this year is a premium pass for those 21 and over for $35 which includes two premium beverages or the standard pass for any age of $25, kids 6 and under are free.

Another addition is the ULTRA Club Beer Garden, featuring Michelob ULTRA the official beer of the Turkey Trot. The ULTRA Club is the place to enjoy a cold Michelob ULTRA at The Trot. There will be a pop-up bar located in the grassy area along Young Street between Akard and Marilla, near the food trucks. A variety of Food Trucks will be on hand to fill any appetite before and after you run or walk. Look for them on Young Street between Marilla and Akard, behind the Dallas Police Memorial.

Again, this year we are offering the Junior Trot presented by TruMoo, a 1K race designed especially for kids age 6 – 11. All Junior Trotters will receive a special finisher medal, a Turkey Trot t-shirt, and a goody bag. For kids that want to do the shorter race, the Junior Trot price is $25. A combo registration is also available and includes Junior Trot and the 5K/8 Mile Turkey Trot. The combo package allows the child to do the Junior Trot and then run/walk with their families in the 5k or 8 Mile.

Packet pickup and registration goes through Wednesday, November 27. Race day registration is $44 untimed and $49 timed. Tot Trot registration for children 6 and under is $15. Don’t forget to register your dog for $15 and receive a cool Y-Trot bandanna and race bib for your 4-legged friends.

The original Dallas YMCA Turkey Trot was held at the Old Fair Grounds back in the early 40’s; but the long string of consecutive races began with the 8-mile race in 1967.  The unique 8- mile race distance was created when the 107 participants were instructed to run along the shores of White Rock Lake “to the big oak tree and back”.  By 1979, the Race had become so popular that it was moved to the Downtown are to accommodate more runners and showcase “Big D”.  The 3-mile Fun Run/Walk, now a certified 5K, was added in 1984 to accommodate the increasing participation of individuals and families.
