Learn the critical skills needed to become a lifeguard and possibly work at the Lake Highlands YMCA this summer. Must be 16 or older, swim 100 yards, swim 50 yards of five specific strokes, surface dive to 9 feet, and follow instructions. Training includes CPR/First Aid. A total of 8.5 hours of online training is required.

Please fill out the Lifeguard Packetand return it to the YMCA's Welcome Center.

Cost:  $150 – members  or $200 – nonmembers 

Course Includes:

  • CPR for the Professional Rescuer
  • First Aid
  • Oxygen Administration
  • YMCA Lifeguarding


  • Must be at least 16 years old
  • Able to swim 100 yd in 2 min
  • Tread water for 2 min
  • Surface dive to depth of 10 feet and swim 15 ft underwater
  • Complete a 200 yd swim consisting of Front Crawl, Breaststroke, sidestroke and Elementary Backstroke w/ hands on chest
  • Sprint 60 ft, perform head first surface dive to retrieve object 10 ft deep, tread water for 1 min w/o hands, return object to depth of 10 ft, swim remainder of pool length, exit pool and perform 100 chest compressions on a mannequin.

All ASHI e-learning must be complete by the first day of class. Y Lifeguard e-learning must be completed by assigned dates.

Participants must attend classes in the registered session – no make up times are available.
