My thought on exercise is being healthy is like Sudoku, you have to make sure all the pieces work in order to achieve a healthy lifestyle. Outside of training, I love to ride my bike outside with my wife, and work on my flexibility and balance. I don’t recommend it, but I have ridden my bike around Big Bend National Park. Certification: Certified Personal Trainer; International Sports Sciences Association

Certified Nutritionist; International Sports Sciences Association

Focus: Young People, Running, Wellness

Bio: Hi, I’m Liz! My passion is helping people attain their fitness goals. I got started in fitness as a kid playing sports and fell in love. As far as exercises go, running is my absolute favorite, it is a great space to clear my head. And, fun fact, I have run 5 marathons. I also enjoy reading, specifically historical fictions, biographies on world leaders and intelligence books about the history of the FBI and CIA. For training, I enjoy working with sports and kids, I actually played on 18 different intramural teams in college. My favorite saying is “There are days when I don’t know if I can run a marathon, but there is a lifetime of knowing that I have” meaning even though sometimes you don’t always hit your goals, you can keep trying.

Certifications: Certified Personal Trainer; National Academy of Sports Medicine

Focus: Nutrition, Calisthenics, Hypertrophy, Endurance, Strength, Running

Bio: Hello, I’m Dylan! Anything involving Health and Fitness lightens up my World! As a kid, competing with friends on who’s the fastest, who could jump the highest, and or who can do the most push-ups and sit-ups made me feel immortal in my neighborhood growing up. My title of Personal Trainer is very very new, but it has been the core of my being all along. I am an ex-collegiate Wide-Receiver playing football at the University of Tennessee at Martin from the years of 2011 - 2013! Your skill level doesn’t matter to me. I enjoy making relationships with all people approaching Personal Training from the holistic view aiming to help people in all areas of Health and Fitness. Weekly, I attend Spin Classes, Yoga, HITT, along with training myself in Resistance Training, Calisthenics, and Long Distance Running. When my body has had enough, I jump right into the pool to swim for laps of Active Recovery in which my body always thanks me for. Lastly, the most important part, Nutrition, rounds out my practice. Eating healthy has been the best way to show my body the love and affection it needs daily to keep up with my high energy demands. A great protein shake is the highlight of my day. I would stack ones made by me against the best companies out there!

Bio: Hi, folks! I grew up training as a dancer, until I had to stop due to autoimmune illness. During the 2020 lockdown, I led virtual workouts for friends and family all over the US as a way to stay engaged and move our bodies. With their encouragement, I completed my certification to share my passion more widely. Since then, I’ve enjoyed working with clients of all ages, abilities, and experience levels. I appreciate that we come to fitness from different directions, from seasoned athletes to novices. All bodies deserve to experience joyful, empowering movement. Come ask how to do one!

Mayo Purnell
Mayo Purnell

Certifications: Certified Personal Trainer; American Council on Exercise

Focus: Athletes, Strength Training

I grew up playing youth sports at the Park Cities Y. My father encouraged me to exercise in conjunction with this, so I did a lot of pushups, sit-ups, and chin-ups as a kid. Running was popular in the 70s and I ran some 5 and 10k’s with my dad.

I played football and wrestled at Highland Park. I began to perceive a difference between the training and the sport - to appreciate training for training’s sake - working out not as a means to an end, but rather an end in itself. Outside of training, I had always been interested in Ancient History - the gods and heroes of Greece and Rome. After graduating from SMU with a degree in English Literature, I lived in Rome in the mid-1990s, pursuing my own interests, reading philosophy, writing a couple of novels and teaching myself to paint. I also worked for the United Nations working in various positions. I returned to the states, worked for the Y for a bit before the new building was built. I then trained Highland Park Athletes independently for a while and now I am back at the Y. My training philosophy is that exercise is an extension of the human body and the practice of its movement. As such, it is not an addition to daily life but a necessary component of it. Strength is the determining factor of quality of life as we age.

Although I was not an athlete growing up, most of my adult life has been spent competing in many combat sports like Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournaments, mixed martial art fights and Muay Thai competitions. I initially got started working with people due to my martial arts training and wanted to know all I could to be the best while giving back as well. I got into weightlifting at the age of 18 and I got my certification when I was 21 years old. From there, I have continued to further my education and knowledge in the health industry by working with people and certifications. I enjoy doing martial arts and my favorite exercise is a pull-up because it demands a lot from your entire body. Fitness is such a stress relief to me, and I enjoy seeing people improve their quality of life and reach whatever goals they have set – which is different for everyone. I’m here to help, ask me how! Ashley Alexander

Education: BA Psychology, University of Texas

Certifications: National Board Certified Health and Wellness Coach, Level 1 Nutrition Coach, Precision Nutrition

Focus: Holistic lifestyle coaching including nutrition, exercise, stress, and sleep as well as female athletes.

Personal Bio: Hi, I'm Ashley! I am dedicated to helping others develop, plan, and implement behavior changes for healthier and balanced lives. I grew up in Dallas, TX as the youngest of 5 kids. We ate a typical, standard American diet so I didn't understand the importance of nutrition at the time and how it connected to mind, body, and spirit. It wasn't until I had a family of my own that I began to focus on improving our diets with whole, natural foods. When I saw that it was possible to transform our health with good nutrition and food is truly medicine - I wanted to share that with others! I'm so excited to work with you! In addition to nutrition coaching, I have a background in music, kickboxing, and karate. In my spare time I enjoy being with family, cooking, playing tennis, and mahjong.
