FIND OUT IF YOU'RE AT RISK

YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program
The Research

The YMCA's Diabetes Prevention Program is based on the landmark Diabetes Prevention study, funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which showed that by eating healthier, engaging in moderate physical activity and losing just 7% of your body weight, a person with prediabetes can prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes by up to 71%.

YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program
CDC Full Recognition

The YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas Diabetes Prevention Program has earned Full Recognition from the CDC. This honorable designation is given to National Diabetes Prevention Program providers that have effectively delivered a quality, evidence-based program that meets all the standards for CDC recognition. Standards include weight loss, physical activity and attendance benchmarks, along with others.

YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program
The Program

This year-long program is held in a small group setting with a certified lifestyle coach who individualizes topics for each participant enabling adaptation of long-term healthy habits. Participants work together to learn about nutrition, physical activity, overcoming stress, staying motivated, and more. Participants meet for 1 hour each session beginning with 16 weekly sessions, then every other week for 3 sessions, and monthly for 6 additional sessions.

Program Goals: Reduce body weight by 7% & Gradually increase physical activity to a minimum of 150 minutes per week

ARE YOU AT RISK?

1 in 3 American adults have prediabetes, a condition where blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not high enough yet to be diagnosed as type 2 diabetes. What’s more, nearly 90% percent of those people don’t know they have it. Having prediabetes greatly increases the chance of developing type 2 diabetes and other serious health conditions. It’s critical for Americans to learn their prediabetes risk, be screened regularly and take the steps necessary to delay or prevent type 2 diabetes.

The American Diabetes Association (ADA) launched its first risk test in 1993. The risk test was adapted by a published study and validated using data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). To simplify the test, only health traits that people would know about themselves were included, such as age, height, and weight, but not blood sugar or cholesterol levels.

A person with a high score on the online risk test (five or higher) is at significant risk for having prediabetes. However, only a blood test can determine an official diagnosis.
