Kids Storytime with Teacher

Pre-K through 1st-grade students (4 to 6 yrs.) have an interactive storytime featuring a STEM picture book, followed by a hands-on STEM lab highlighting the featured book. This program is 12-weeks of early literacy and introduction to STEM for our young explores. The one-hour instruction provided by our partners, Mad Science, will provide our youth STEM learning through the magical world of storytelling. Participants attending all weekly sessions will qualify for a STEM storybook at end of the program.

First Lego League at the Y

Participants ages 6 to 11yrs will learn all about design concepts and use engineering principles to create and build their models. Designed by a LEGO Certified Professional from Mad Science, these are working models that allow participants to see how objects work from the inside. They will build bridges, design elevators, vehicles and see firsthand how a theme park uses engineering design to create fun rides! This is a 12-week program with one-hour sessions. Each class features a unique build made with LEGO bricks, themed around a different engineering field. There will be build-aligned, branded take-homes for every class

Sphero - BOLT Robotics

The Sphero Robotic workshop helps participants ages 11 to 14yrs work together to code and program robots while engaging in a problem-solving task. Participants will complete the workshop with a basic knowledge of JavaScript and how programming works within various career tracks. Using a Computer Science Curriculum, participants engage in a 3-week session and will be able to:

Create their own Draw program, involving direction and speed

Manipulate and sequence movement, lights, and sound blocks

Create and animate their own designs on the Bolt matrix

Create Block coding programs with 1 to 2 simple controls

Read and interpret sensor data from all Draw and basic Block programs

Work as core engineers and programmers to complete projects

A STEM Makerspace is a place of shared interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics to collaborate to create or design a project. The Y is currently hoping to build Makerspace areas in several of our branches.  Your donation will help make this plan a reality for the kids in our communities.
