The Lakewest Family YMCA Will Remain Closed, Programs Will Shift to Nearby Branches

Starting in 2019, the Dallas YMCA began working closely with an independent, third-party group to examine the best way our facilities can be used to serve the community, including the Lakewest Family YMCA.

In February, our plan was to make Lakewest a “programs only” Y as the fitness equipment at this location was largely not utilized. Then the COVID-19 pandemic happened and, like so many nonprofits, 2020 did not turn out like we expected. The Lakewest Y and all our branches closed from March – May. While our branches were closed, our services continued thanks to our staff, members, and donors. When COVID-19 left people without food, childcare and created a blood shortage, the Y was there to support our community. But unfortunately, the financial difficulties brought on during COVID-19 have led us in a new direction with this branch.

Effective July 17th, the Lakewest YMCA will not reopen and we will merge the program participants into existing programs at nearby Ys. This was an extremely difficult decision. We will continue serving this community through programming at nearby Y’s. Those with fitness memberships can use any YMCA facility in the Dallas area including the T. Boone Pickens YMCA and the Moody Family YMCA which are both within 6 miles of the Lakewest YMCA.

Program participants, including those in swim lessons, after school care, summer camp, teen camp, sports, swim team and activities for seniors, can use these programs at the T. Boone Pickens YMCA and the Moody Family YMCA which are both within 6 miles of the Lakewest YMCA. We are committed to continue serving the West Dallas community.

Members may use their existing membership to access YMCAs across Dallas and hundreds of participating YMCAs across the country through nationwide membership.

Thank you for taking the time to read this message. If you are staff, a member or donor, thank you for your continued support, confidence and prayers. You make it possible for the YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas to put Christian values into practice through programs that build a healthy spirit, mind and body. We work diligently every day to be a cause driven organization that supports youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.

Please feel free to contact me directly with any questions you may have. Additonally, if you have stories that you would like to share from your time at the Lakewest Y, click here to share.

Sincerely,
