The YMCA Swim Lesson Curriculum is a core group of aquatic skills every person needs to be safe around water. As the foundation of our program, these skills allow students to learn correct swim stroke techniques. Students begin with and build upon skills they are ready to learn, helping them to celebrate their successes, build self-confidence, and enjoy learning to swim and water safety.

Make Up Policy:
No individual make-ups are allowed because of illness, travel, personal schedule conflict, etc. If a lesson is cancelled due to pool problems/bad weather, Fridays are designated each week as a make up day.
The primary objective is water adjustment. Parents will be taught to work with their child and keep them safe in and around the water. Children play games that use basic movements in the water such as kicking, arm strokes, and breath control. Basic survival skills including submersion, flotation and exiting the water are mildly introduced. This class also serves as preparation for instructor taught classes beginning at age 3.

Preschool swim lessons are our introductory level classes. Depending on their skill level, most will start at the water acclimation level to get them comfortable with the water. They will work on going under water and blowing bubbles, floating on their backs with assistance. They will also learn to jump in the water turn and grab the wall and climb out on their own. This is very important to water safety.

School age lessons start at the introductory level of Water Acclimation and continue to Water Mechanics. Level will depend on the swimmers skill and abilities. Please click on the tab for swim lesson level to see where you swimmer best fits.

Please sign up at our Welcome Center. Continuation at end of session is not guaranteed.
NOTE: Applicants must be at least 3 years old and must first complete at least one session of group lessons in the last 12 months here at the Coppell Family YMCA before participating in private or semi-private lessons. Private lessons focus on building skills with minimal touching or holding by the instructor, and minimal use of flotation devices. This requires the participant to be comfortable in the water without being held. Financial assistance is not available for private or semi-private lessons.
NOTICE REGARDING CONTINUATIONS:
Continuation after each completed session is not guaranteed and depends on instructor availability and current wait list. To give other members the opportunity to receive private lessons, each participant is limited to 8 private lessons (2 consecutive sessions upon availability). After the completion of 8 lessons, each participant must return to group lessons or re-enter the wait list.
