STEM For All - Imagine Science

Last week, the young women of Imagine Science were thinking outside the box when it came to how to enjoy their summer vacation.  Their minds swirled with excitement and wonder throughout the entire week as they were assigned different projects such as a diagram of the human anatomy, dissecting chicken wings, and even creating their own version of a prosthetic arm.

Imagine Science Outreach Camp has allowed these young women to pursue their passion for STEM during the summer while also molding new friendships along the way. Each project consisted of different groups creating their final product and demonstrating it to the rest of the camp. Working together to share different ideas and perspectives built a new sense of community for these girls with the realization that they were not alone in their passion for STEM. Not only that but presenting their group's work in front of their peers enabled a boost of confidence for these young women. Research has shown that young girls are less likely to have their comments credited, adopted and remembered. However, Imagine Science has created an environment in which the girls feel powerful and comfortable to contribute and speak up to what they are most passionate about.

When they realized that their work was valued and successful, it sparked new hopes and dreams for their future in STEM. Many of these middle school girls talked about their plans to be doctors, engineers and teachers when they grow up. During the week at Imagine Science, their dreams transformed into tangible goals after working on projects that mirrored what they would be doing in their futures. By 2020, 1.4 million jobs will be available in the STEM sector, yet only 3% of those jobs will be filled my women. Imagine Science is a building block to increase the percentage.
