The Irving Family YMCA Will Remain Closed; The YMCA Remains Committed to Serve the Community Through its Programs

The Irving Family YMCA will not reopen and will remain closed effective August 17, 2020. The YMCA will continue to serve the Irving community through programs and an expanding partnership with the City of Irving.

The Dallas YMCA has been working closely with an independent, third-party group to examine the best way our facilities can be used to serve the community, including the Irving Family YMCA.

Our clear strengths at the Irving Y are in the programs we offer for youth and teens - basketball, soccer, afterschool and teen programs, STEM, Play and Learn, summer camp and swim lessons - and for active older adults. The facilities themselves are outdated and no longer functional for how we can best serve this community.

When the COVID-19 pandemic happened, like so many nonprofits, the YMCA was hard hit. The Irving Y and all our branches closed from March – May. Thanks to the support of our Y members and donors, we have distributed food to more than 19,000 people, provided 30,000 diapers and 1,100 packages of wipes, provided emergency child care with more than 3,800 kid visits and distributed 450 computers to children who need them in order to learn. The Y will keep providing that support as long as there is a need.

But unfortunately, the financial difficulties brought on during COVID-19 have led us in a new direction with this branch.

Effective August 17, 2020, the Irving Family YMCA will not reopen. This was an extremely difficult decision.

The Y has a long 60-plus year history in the Irving community. Although our physical location will close, the Y will still be present in the community, offering programs, after school care and help to those who need it. We are working with the City of Irving to determine how we will be able to continue serving the Irving community in the years ahead. We’ll share more details about our plans in the coming months when an agreement is put together. The Y is committed to serving Irving in the future.

Even though our physical building will no longer be in operation, the Y will be present in the Irving community. Moving forward, the Y will operate youth sports programming in partnership with the City of Irving, utilizing its facilities. This includes fall and spring soccer, volleyball, and winter basketball. We will operate our school aged services and teen programming in partnership with Irving ISD. The Y will be expanding the after school care we offer with Irving ISD to 28 sites this school year.

The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program, Get Up and Go, FIT for Health, Blood Pressure Self-Monitoring and Community Health programming will be offered virtually.

Members may use their existing membership to access the T. Boone Pickens YMCA which are the closest locations to Irving, or any YMCA across Dallas and Fort Worth.
