Lake Highlands Family YMCA Unveils New Indoor, Year-Round Pool

The Y is also planning additional renovations and a Family Outdoor Pool

DALLAS (January 26, 2022) – The YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas announced today renovations are complete on the indoor pool at the Lake Highlands Family YMCA, and the pool is now open to members and program participants for use. The pool was originally forced to close after sustaining high wind damage from storms a few years ago. The indoor pool has now been expanded to a six-lane, heated pool that will allow for additional swim lessons, swim team, water aerobics, recreational swim and lap swim for members and participants.

This is the first phase of a multi-phased renovation project at the Y that will take place over the next 18 months. The project was originally announced in March 2020, just days before the beginning of the COVID-19 nationwide shutdown. After delays due to the pandemic, the renovation is back on schedule with plans to add 15,000 square feet of additional space and update existing areas of the branch. The renovations will allow the Lake Highlands Y to serve more members of the community through an expanded array of programs and services.

“We plan to grow this Y not only in size, but in the scope of how we serve our community. With the updates to our branch, the Lake Highlands Family Y will be able to expand our community-based programs including, but not limited to, youth sports, teen leadership, drowning prevention programs and more,” said Brian Haines, District Executive Director, Lake Highlands Family YMCA. “We are dedicated to the Lake Highlands community and look forward to expanding the services we can offer our neighbors as we continue to grow.”

In addition to the existing plans for the branch, the Lake Highlands YMCA is kicking off a fundraising campaign to raise $1.5 million needed to build an outdoor recreational pool. The new amenities will provide a safe place for the community to bring their children for swimming, fun, and a place for kids to learn life-saving swim skills as part of the Y’s Safety Around Water program, which recently set a goal of eliminating childhood drowning in children 4 and under. As a component of the campaign, a challenge to raise $500,000 by March 31, 2022, has been offered in which the YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas Foundation will match the first $500,000 raised by this date dollar for dollar to encourage community support and ensure the necessary funds are raised to add the outdoor pool. The Lake Highlands Family Y expansion is part of a multi-year, strategic growth strategy of the YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas. Its Board of Directors and leadership approved a comprehensive plan to renovate existing YMCA locations, partner with new communities and reimagine programs to better serve the needs of the growing North Texas community.

The Lake Highlands Family YMCA is hiring lifeguards, swim instructors and additional staff to lead water exercise classes at the new indoor pool. To see open positions, please visit www.ymcadallas.org/employment.
