YMCA LAUNCHES FLY THE COOP VIRTUAL FUN RUN/BIKE/WALK FOR THOSE IMPACTED BY COVID-19

Participate in this family-friendly activity May 16 - May 17, 2020

Dallas, Texas – Friday, May 8, 2020 – The YMCA’s across the Dallas Metroplex are launching a free virtual fun run, walk, or bike ride in order to promote fun family-friendly activities outside the house during the COVID-19 public health crisis. “Fly The Coop Virtual Run/Walk/Ride” is on Saturday, May 16th – Sunday, May 17th where individuals and families may run, bike or walk without a minimum distance or time to finish over one or both days. The YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas, YMCA of Metropolitan Fort Worth and the Arlington-Mansfield Area YMCA are joining forces to provide individuals and families a fun opportunity to get some exercise and enjoy outside while practicing social distancing safely.

To participate, register for free at www.ymcadallas.org/turkeytrot/flythecoop.

Participants can choose to run, walk, ride bicycles as well as other activities including walking/running with a pet, roller skating or even get pulled in a wagon! Many people are feeling “cooped up” during this time of social distancing and stay-at-home regulations. The YMCA is offering this as a remedy to help those impacted to spend some safe, quality time outdoors.

Fly The Coop in May and the annual Dallas YMCA Turkey Trot and Fort Worth Y Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving Day are held to help members of the community be healthy, active and mentally well. It’s up to each individual family or individual to decide how far they want to run, bike or walk.

All registered participants will receive:

  • A race bib to download, print, customize and wear during your activity
  • A virtual medal to download and print
  • Early access to register for the 2020 YMCA Turkey Trots in Dallas and Fort Worth

The Y ensures all people have equitable access to the essentials needed to become thriving members of the community. Daily, the Y bridges and fills individual and community needs as a catalyst for impactful change.

“As social distancing and shelter-in-place guidelines prevent traditional health and wellness routines, it’s more important than ever that people stay active and prioritize both their physical and mental health,” explained Curt Hazelbaker, President and CEO for YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas. “The Y is committing to helping people stay active at a time when they may not be able to visit a physical gym or have access to workout equipment.”

The public health concerns regarding COVID-19 have brought about some challenging times. Now that restrictions are being relaxed, the Y wants to make sure to help members of the community get and stay healthy in body, mind and spirt.  For more information about the Dallas Fort Worth area YMCAs, visit ymcadfw.org.
