YMCA YOUTH & GOVERNMENT

TEACHERS AND CLUBS

OUR IMPACT

  • 33% of 18-29 year olds report voting in the last election.  74% of our YG participants report they will register to vote.
  • Only 20% of young adults report volunteering, as opposed to 57% of our participants who say that they volunteer twice weekly.
  • Teachers report significant increases on ERB and STAAR test scores with their Youth and Government students.

Mission

To help teenagers become responsible citizens and future leaders of our nation.

Goal

To create an environment in which students can increase their political awareness and understanding, while learning the meaning of social action through an actual hands-on experience in government.

The Youth and Government program functions under the umbrella of local YMCA’s. Due to this structure, local teachers receive YMCA Branch Resources and Staff as additional club support.

Clubs meet weekly at the leisure of the club advisor and club president, usually deciding on a day that suits the full team. All clubs are encouraged to have a minimum of 10 students to begin while also focusing on one section during their first year. Sections are usually selected by advisor preference or school interest.

Advisors are supplied with program materials and will receive a training in fall.  Materials include manuals, court cases, forms, guidelines, resources and much more.  Tools are also available on our website pages for each section.
