YMCA YOUTH & GOVERNMENT

VOLUNTEERS

Mission

To help teenagers become responsible citizens and future leaders of our nation.

Goal

To create an environment in which students can increase their political awareness and understanding, while learning the meaning of social action through an actual hands-on experience in government. Make a difference and help teens become responsible citizens and future leaders of our nation by volunteering for Youth and Government. We rely on dedicated volunteers to provide their time, expertise and sponsorship support to our amazing program.

Opportunities to make a difference:

JUDICIAL COACH

(Criminal, Civil or Appellate Attorneys)

Attorneys can spend an average of 3-5 hours per week during the months of September through January preparing a mock trial or appellate team to succeed at the District and State Conferences.  They can also help prepare qualified teams for the National Judicial Competition in spring and summer; chaperoning at conferences is also welcome.

JUDICIAL EVALUATOR

(Criminal, Civil or Appellate Attorneys or Judges)

Volunteers are given evaluator packets with necessary materials and criteria to review prior to conference in order to score teams and their performance that will qualify them for the Texas Youth and Government State Conference. Volunteers will receive training prior to their evaluation sessions, as well. Knowledge of the case is a plus and will be sent out by request. Evaluators can select to serve all day, morning shift or afternoon shift; average service is 4-6 hours or more, depending on availability and desire.

LEGISLATIVE EVALUATORS

(Lobbyists, Government and Policy Professors and Professionals)

During district conference volunteers monitor and evaluate students during Hearing Committee and Joint Session on their decorum, debate skills, exhibition of character and speaking skills to determine Distinguished Delegates and Outstanding Hearing Committee teams and Statesman. Volunteers will receive training prior to committees and can select to serve all day, morning shift or afternoon shift; average service is 4-6 hours or more, depending on availability and desire.

MEDIA

(Online, Broadcast and Newspaper)

Volunteers will work with students prior to the district conference to evaluate assignments and send feedback to students on topics and research they should conduct and consider. During district conference volunteers can help students run the media section and help them produce an online newsletter, social media pieces and broadcast video. Volunteers can select to serve all day, morning shift or afternoon shift; average service is 4-6 hours or more, depending on availability and desire.

CONFERENCE VOLUNTEER

Conference volunteers oversee various logistics prior to and during the conference such as registration, volunteer check in, opening and closing ceremonies, awards and more for the November 21 Conference. They also help as score tabulators for competition and elections. If you are interested in helping in an auxiliary manner for our conference we have shifts available for morning, afternoon or all day.

LEADERSHIP AND BOARD

We welcome passionate citizens in the private, public and social sectors such as public officials, attorneys and policy makers to serve as Section leadership, trainers and advisory board for our District or for our State Youth and Government program.
